How do I request an absentee ballot?

An application to vote absentee (PDF format) can be found here.

You may also write a letter containing the following information:
  • the applicant’s name
  • the applicant’s voting address
  • the applicant’s mailing address
  • the applicant’s current home telephone number
  • the election for which the ballot is being requested
  • the date of the request
  • an affirmation that the applicant has resided in the precinct for at least thirty days
  • the applicant’s signature.

In North Dakota, qualified voters are not required to provide a reason when requesting an application to vote absentee.

Where do I send the request?

Applications for absentee ballots may be delivered to the appropriate county auditor by mail, in person, or by fax. For a list of county auditors, see the MS Word file available here.

What is the deadline for requesting an absentee ballot?

Absentee ballots are to be made available by the 40th day before Election Day and must be requested with sufficient time for mailing the application.

What is the voting procedure?

It is advisable to make a request as early as possible to ensure processing and return in time for Election Day. Absentee ballots may not be issued on Election Day.

You fill out an application (this can be faxed to you and faxed back), you will then receive an absentee ballot, you vote it and then either drop it off or drop it in the mail by the required deadlines. The only time you would need a witness would be if the voter is not capable of signing their own name to the application or absentee ballot envelope. You would then have a “witness to the mark” that would have to sign the name of the voter after the “x” and then sign their own name as a witness to the person who signed with an “x”.

What are the deadlines for voting absentee?

Absentee ballots must be returned and postmarked by the day before Election Day:
February 4 for the Primary Election
November 3 for the General Election

What are the election dates and deadlines for 2008?

Primary Election: February 5
General Election: November 4
North Dakota is the only state that does not register voters.
